What I learned about being outside from my cat

March 1, 2013

When was the last time you took a walk to exercise your senses?

For example, it is really nice out right now in NW Jersey and my one cat wants to go out, not for exercise, but just to go out and check things out.

For us as humans of any age, this type of activity is just as important to add to our activities as going out for “exercise”.

So for today I suggest that no matter what the weather or temperature, go for an exploratory walk.

Check things out and:

  • Stop and listen, perhaps with your eyes closed
  • Stop and un-focus your attention and lets your eyes take in without filtering what you focus on
  • Check out colors, textures and materials
  • Pick up a small stone and play catch by yourself
  • Stop and really investigate something new, or something you have just looked at in passing
  • Stop and just enjoy the weather… just take it in
  • Try to sneak up on something or someone  (but not stalking)

Don’t set a time limit,  just have fun with it and let me know if you enjoyed this exercise.
