Self care, self awareness and aging healthy go hand in hand

May 15, 2013

This struck me today while at a networking event where I got to view 45 professional of varying ages move about during the meet and greet portion of the program.

I related what I saw to  those active seniors who come to my classes and those I meet and see of all ages while out and about in the community.

You may be thinking,  “tell me Stan, have you noticed?”

Basically a few thoughts come to mind:

  • People in general seem to have lost connection to their bodies
  • People in general do not take care of themselves
  • People in general pay no attention to their posture
  • People in general are unaware of how they move
  • People in general do no sort of self care

There are common symptoms I see in those who do no exercise and don’t think about it and really seem not to be aware of how much their condition negatively effects them.

So many have at least one,  a few, many or all of the following issues:

  • Tiredness
  • Depressed
  • Stressed
  • Overweight
  • Overuse of Alcohol
  • Smoke
  • struggle in many everyday activities
  • Body Aches and Pains
  • Out of control Diseases
  • An over-reliance on medications

Compare this to those who pay attention to their bodies, and keep an open connection to how what they do effects how they are.

I see many older adults who work at keeping as active as they can that

  • Are energetic even at 80 plus years of age
  • Are well within their proper weight range
  • Are looking for more ways to keep fit
  • Have not given in to aging, even when they have age related physical issues
  • Battle against age related diseases
  • Are positive
  • Have fewer doctor visits and need less medications than their peers

They realize that they need to keep in charge of their lives and look out for themselves.  There is a saying that no-one knows your body and state of health than you do.  However, if you don’t pay attention to it, you will never notice it telling you that something is amiss.
