It’s all in the shoulder blades man, it’s all in the blades

August 14, 2014

Are you aware of the tension you carry in your shoulders?

When looking to relax the shoulders do not think of the top of your shoulders,  think of the shoulder blades which are tied to the spine and are integrated into most upper body large and small movements.

Learning to relax the shoulder blades allows the shoulders themselves to drop, which in turn helps to relax and release tension in your back and neck.

Here is a quick exercise> Shoulder raises with relaxed shoulders

  • Sit upright with your back away from your chair, or standing:
  • Let your arms hang loose by your side
  • As you breathe in lift your shoulders by raising your shoulder blades while keeping your shoulders relaxed
  • As you exhale, lower your shoulder blades letting your shoulders relax back back to their natural position.

Take your time and try to truly feel each part of your back and shoulders and they go through the range of motion. The slower and more relaxed you are the better feel you will have.

All the motion should come from the shoulder blades and not from tightening and lifting from the shoulders
